The NSRC is proud to present this month’s Respiratory Showcase, Saint Elizabeth Regional Medical Center.

 

Saint Elizabeth Regional Medical Center is a 262 bed, not for profit, regional facility located in Lincoln, Nebraska.  Areas of specialization include a 16-bed medical/surgical critical care unit, which includes a pulmonologist-driven intensivist program, a 16 bed regional burn center and a 27 bed Level III NICU. Other areas of specialization include:  oncology, radiation therapy, orthopedics, Perinatal and maternal/fetal medicine. 

 

The Pulmonary Services Division at Saint Elizabeth includes the Department of Respiratory Care, Pulmonary Diagnostics Laboratory, Community Asthma Education Initiative, Sleep Disorders Laboratory, Neurodiagnostics (EEG) Laboratory and Cardiac & Pulmonary Rehabilitation.  The Division employs a total of 59 staff with 49 of these being licensed Respiratory Care Practitioners.  The division leadership consists of Jay Snyder, RRT, Director, Dr. Bill Johnson, Medical Director, Pam Kelley, RRT, Respiratory Care Clinical Coordinator, and Jane McReynolds, RRT, Diagnostics Clinical Coordinator, Pam Robertson, RN, Rehabilitation Coordinator and Cindy Rempe, RN, AE-C, Asthma Coordinator.

Areas of specialization in which Respiratory Care Practitioners work include Pulmonary Rehabilitation, Respiratory Care, Community Asthma Education Initiative, Neurodiagnostics (EEG) Lab, Sleep Disorders Laboratory and Pulmonary Diagnostics Lab.

The Department of Respiratory Care consists of 40 full time, part time and per diem therapists.  Advanced Practice therapists work primarily in either the Critical Care or Neonatal Intensive Care units.  Other Practitioners have the opportunities to work in pediatrics, medical/oncology, Progressive Care and the Burn Center.  

Respiratory Care performs over 300,000 patient procedures annually and manages over 6,000 invasive and non-invasive ventilator days annually.  The scope of practice for Respiratory Care Practitioners at Saint Elizabeth includes: neonatal transport, intubation, routine mechanical ventilation, airway management, arterial line insertion, neonatal and adult HFOV, nitric oxide administration and act as a team member on the Rapid Response Team.

The department utilizes the Viasys Avea for conventional mechanical ventilation and for HFOV ventilation utilizes the Sensormedics 3100A and 3100B as well as the Percussionaire VDR-4.  For noninvasive ventilation, they use the Respironics Vision for non-invasive ventilation.  Protocols in use include: Respiratory Care Rapid Response Team; oxygen therapy weaning; Conversion from SVN to MDI therapy; Xopenex administration; BIPAP ventilation; Ventilator Wean Trial; Lung Expansion; and Incentive Spirometry protocols.
