Madonna’s Respiratory Care Department and Pulmonary Program:
In calendar year 2007 Madonna’s respiratory therapists cared for 126 ventilator patients in the Long Term Acute Care Hospital and Acute Rehab programs. Of those, 60% weaned from the ventilator in an average of 19 days. Of the 76 vent patients who weaned, approximately 2/3 discharged home or went on for further rehabilitation. Madonna currently has 36 regularly scheduled RT staff, and 19 PRN staff.
We serve patients with varied diagnosis, including spinal cord injury, brain injury, neurological disease, post-trauma and more, from throughout the Midwest and across the country. Madonna treated patients from 30 states in 2007.
Madonna’s respiratory therapists work very closely with the interdisciplinary team, patient and family to ensure an effective and individualized treatment program. Dr. Lisa Mansur, pulmonologist, serves as the Pulmonary Program Medical Advisor and Dr. Sean Barry, pulmonologist, serves as the Respiratory Therapy Department Medical Director.
Our respiratory care practitioners specialize in inpatient pulmonary rehabilitation and respiratory care. Madonna respiratory therapists participate on code team, intubation team and PACE team (Post Acute Rapid Response). Mechanical ventilator and tracheostomy weaning are Madonna’s RT’s areas of expertise.
The department utilizes the ESPRIT ventilator and NICO for the difficult to wean ventilator-dependent patient. The LTV 1200 ventilator is used for vent-dependent patients for mobility. Additionally, the CADENCE self breathing system and Vapotherm 2000i hydration system technologies help our patients meet their goals.
Madonna RTs utilize protocols from the following categories: Lung Expansion, Small Volume Nebulizer, Meter Dose Inhaler, Ventilator and Tracheostomy Weaning and Secretion Management, including Mechanical In-Exsufflator (MIE).
In 2007, the National Association of Long Term Hospitals (NALTH) presented Madonna with the national Goldberg Award, recognizing Madonna RT’s national leadership in respiratory rehabilitation, treatment and research for the Respiratory Independence Measure of Madonna (R.I.M.M.©), an assessment and outcomes measure to evaluate progress in patients with respiratory dysfunction.
