The NSRC is proud to announce this month’s Respiratory Showcase, Community Hospital-Respiratory Care Department in McCook.
Community Hospital is located in McCook, Nebraska. McCook is a small farming community with a population of 8,000 people. It serves the southwest Nebraska area as one of the largest critical access hospitals in the region.
The Respiratory Care department consists of four fulltime and one part time respiratory therapists, as well as one fulltime and one part time registered nurse. We administer routine floor care, BIPAP Therapy, ventilator management, as well as pulmonary rehabilitation services. Our diagnostics include ABGs, ECGs, Holters, Cardiac event monitoring, PFTs, and EEGs.
We have a 2 bed off site sleep lab, which is staffed by a registered polysomnography technician. We offer sleep studies 3 nights per week.
We are all BLS, ACLS, PALS, and NRP certified. We respond to all code events and other emergency's in the hospital. We do all of the airway management, including intubations as needed.
Our work extends through out the community in many ways. We assist with local health fairs, occupational screening, and high school career development. We do this by assisting with the hospital sponsored Health Career Class offered to local area high school seniors, as well as a career discovery days offered to high school students in general.
Community Hospital is also a rural teaching facility for area respiratory therapy students. In this type of facility they gain many experiences in any given day that they may not see elsewhere. From giving an aerosol treatment one minute, to responding to a trauma code the next.
