January 11th the Omaha area hospitals which are in the OMMRS (Omaha Metropolitan Medical Response System) area received 61 ventilators. They will be available for use by early to mid February following RT staff and Biomed training. These ventilators were purchased with federal funding in response to pandemic/disaster planning.

 

OMMRS will have control of the distribution and master list. Each participating hospital (Creighton University Medical Center, The Nebraska Medical Center, Nebraska Methodist Hospital, Fremont Area Medical Center, Midlands Hospital, Immanuel Medical Center, Lakeside Medical Center, Bergan Mercy Hospital, Veterans

Administration Hospital, Blair Hospital, Saunders County Hospital, Jennie Edmunson, and Mercy Hospital) has an appointed contact person responsible for storage, calibration, staff training, competency and upkeep of the ventilators.

Participating hospital have agreed to assume the operational costs of circuit purchase, maintenance, and storage of the ventilators. In addition, the ventilators may be utilized as indicated in everyday service to enhance the familiarity of patient application and setup by RT's.

Each participating hospital Biomed departments have agreed to be trained in the Preventive Maintenance and service of the ventilators.

Jerry Nevins, RN (OMMRS Co-Chair of the Equipment and Training sub-committee) would like to purchase an additional 39 ventilators, for a total of 100 vents for the OMMRS area. The purchase of these additional ventilators will be made as funding is available.  

This is a great sign of progress for RT's in the State of Nebraska.

The OMMRS Equipment and Training sub-committee and the RT’s in the OMMRS area evaluated and decided on the ventilator that met the needs of the OMMRS communities. There are six Medical Response Systems (MRS) in Nebraska. Each MRS system is in the process of doing pandemic planning. Contact Russ or Jenny Bush to locate your medical response system coordinator.
